Brief History of Porec

The town dates back to the ancient Roman period and has a rich history evident in its well-preserved buildings. It was ruled by various kingdoms and empires throughout its history, including the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, the Venetian Republic, and Austria-Hungary.

During the Roman period, Porec was an important trading port and the second-largest town in Istria.

In the 15th century, Porec came under Venetian rule and played a significant role in Venetian history. The town became a vital trading post, connecting Venice to the Adriatic.

  • Try local beer. Although Istria is known for its wines, there is also a growing number of small, independent brewers. One such brewer in Porec, Bura Brew, uses just five top-quality ingredients: water, barley malt, low-content wheat malt, hops, and yeast.
  • Have ice cream or gelato at Il Gelato di Salvatore. This popular shop serves delicious homemade ice cream crafted from local ingredients. The lines outside prove that the chilly treat is worth waiting for. Vegetarian and vegan options.
