Motovun is at the top of a steep hill with a wonderfully preserved medieval fortification, 277 meters above sea level. In ancient times, Celts and Illyrians built fortresses at present-day Motovun. The village’s name is also of Celtic origin, derived from the word Montona, which means “a town in the hills.”
